My newest images of synthetic flowers occupy a dark pictorial space, floating, detached from any background. With this detachment, I try to convey a strong visage of genial identity. The internal glow and color of these botanicals engage the viewer to ponder a certain exuberance in the objects.
I use vintage light bulb floral filaments as the subjects. The bulbs were manufactured in the mid 20th century between the decades of the 30’s through the late 60’s. The images are captured with a digital camera which reads only the illuminated filament, with a black background.
The pedals have an interior glow from the tungsten alloy of the flower shapes inside the inert gaseous environment of the bulb. The light source emanating aggressively from the flower shapes illuminates the surrounding leaves which display, in some cases, brownish anomalies similar to real leaves. This illumination happens in real time and is the result of in-camera exposures.
